Before the soviet and Taliban took over Afghanistan, Kabul was the centre of not just trade but also music in Afghanistan. Heart was also equally important for its music especially for outsiders. The lyrics of afghani classical songs were in Pashto or farsi or Persian languages.
Afghani classical music, also known as Klasik, is heavily influenced from the north Indian classical music style. The reason for this is that many Hindustani classical singers immigrated to the royal court in Kabul in the 1860’s on invitation from Amir Sher Ali Khan. Thus Klasik is divided into instrumental forms and vocal forms that is raga or nagme or ghazal or tarana etc.

Unlike their Hindustani counterparts the afghani ragas are more focused on the rhythmn and use the tabla as their base more often. The other instruments used in afghani music are dohol, zebraghali, rubab, tambur, sitar, dayra, dutar, dilruba etc.

The rubab is known as the lion of all instruments and is often considered as the national instrument of Afghanistan. It’s a lute like instrument and is the fore runner of the Indian sarod. Popular rubabplayers are Aziz Herawi, Ustad Mohammed Omar, Mohammed Rahim Khushnawaz, Homayun Sakhi, Essa Kassemi etc.
